The YB-52 made its first flight on 15 April 1952. There are quite a few internet posts (http://www.boeing.com/defense-space/military/b52-strat/b52_50th/ff.htm) about the B-52 birthday.  This of course brought me back to my initial flight on a B-52...
 
I made my first flight as an EW in the G-model during Combat Crew Training (CCTS), Castle AFB, CA in the of Fall 1985.  I had volunteered for the B-52 before graduating from Nav school at Mather AFB.  Rumors came down that there were "lots" of B-52 slots to fill and very few of us would be assigned to the more "glamorous" aircraft (two-seat fighters, recce, special ops, etc).  I didn't mind volunteering for the BUFF; my wife (ICBM mx officer at the time) appllied for a "Join-spouse" assignment -- i.e. we stood a good chance of getting stationed together at...Minot AFB, ND!

The President, the SECDEF, and the CJC released an unclassified version of the Defense Strategic Guidance at a press conference earlier today.  You can find the document at the DoD website OR go to the AOC Open Forum library.  Overall observations include:

Downsize overall force – more focus on mobilized forces
Primary planning threats – AirSea battle construct so focus on China and also Iran [more]
